Be a Redshirt with IDW’s Star Trek comics contest

November 4, 2011 in Book Previews, Contests

Are you a comics fan who loves your local comics store? Are you willing to “die” to protect your retailer? Prove it with the Star Trek Be A Redshirt contest. The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund (CBLDF), IDW Publishing and CBS Consumer Products are giving Star Trek fans a chance to “Be a Redshirt” on the cover of an upcoming Star Trek comic.

Originating in the classic Star Trek episodes and expanding to pop culture at large, a “redshirt” is a character that dies soon after being introduced. With the “Be a Reshirt” contest, the winning fan will have the honor of dying while heroically saving their retailer. The grand prizewinner will be featured as a redshirt on an upcoming cover of IDW’s new Star Trek ongoing series, placing themselves between their local retailer and a phaser blast. The “Be a Redshirt” contest is open to any comics reader who thinks their local retailer is the best in the business.

To enter the Be A Redshirt contest, fans must e-mail their explanation in 300 words or less about why their retailer is the best to IDW at contests@IDWPublishing.com with the subject: Save My Retailer. The winning fan and their retailer will be depicted on a limited-edition variant cover of Star Trek. This special cover will be limited to only 300 copies: 100 each to the winning fan and their retailer, plus 100 to CBLDF to help them continue the important and challenging work of defending retailers everywhere. The winning fan will also receive the original art, by the Sharp Brothers.

Launched in September, IDW’s new Star Trek ongoing series explores the new Star Trek universe, following the events of the game-changing, blockbuster 2009 film. Joining forces with Star Trek writer/producer Roberto Orci, IDW and CBS explore the vast implications of the alternate timeline created by the film in this new, monthly, ongoing comics series that reimagines classic Star Trek episodes.

Under the creative direction of Orci, fan-favorite Star Trek writer Mike Johnson and artists Stephen Molnar and Joe Corroney bring this alternate universe to life and begin the countdown to the highly anticipated Star Trek sequel. Following alternate-reality versions of “Where No One Has Gone Before” and “Galileo 7,” Star Trek #5 kicks off a two-part re-imagining of “Operation: Annihilate.” This gripping episode brings Captain Kirk comes face to face with ghosts from his past when a rescue mission reunites him with the last person he expects to see.

In addition to print, Star Trek comics are also available digitally through a variety of free apps, including, through the Apple’s iTunes: the Star Trek Comics app, the Comics by comiXology app and the IDW Comics app.

Demiurge Studios holding robot design contest for upcoming game

March 3, 2011 in Contests, Gaming, Media Images, Videos

Shoot Many Robots and the contest Design Many RobotsBoston-based indie game developer Demiurge Studios has launched a contest for aspiring game designers and fans of the upcoming downloadable title, Shoot Many Robots. The online contest, dubbed ‘Design Many Robots,’ asks creators to design their own vision of mechanical terror to be shot full of lead in the upcoming project, vying for a chance to have their robot appear in the first expansion pack for Shoot Many Robots when it launches later this year. Winners of the contest will also be given the chance to be flown to the Boston area to visit Demiurge Studios and watch their robot creation come to life within the game.

“In the spirit of the Game Developer’s Conference this week, we wanted to kick-off this contest to give the next generation of designers a chance to appear in our first independently developed title,” said Demiurge Studios’ Albert Reed. “We hope to see it all. We’ve created a world chock full of chainsaw-wielding arachnid-bots, diesel-mechanical gorillas, and fire-breathing bull-dozers that exist in an industrial land full of oil, rust and spare parts. The door is open to add even more members to this motley crew, and we want to grow the robot army by letting our fans design and vote on who we should be blowing up next.”

Each and every robot, large and small, bares its own offensive and defensive characteristics that will be challenging up to four players at once on screen. The Demiurge team has also given a breakdown of existing robots on their website, and asks that players carefully consider building enemies that will be just as challenging as they are fresh and creative.

Launching this year, Shoot Many Robots will deliver ‘run and gun meets action-RPG’ game play that will have up to four players working together online to fight through an intense and chaotic robot uprising.

Demiurge Studios is one of the largest independent game developers in the Boston area, diligently continuing to work with several top-tier partners on multiple unannounced titles, as well as on their own franchises. The studio’s credits include some of the most well-known titles within the industry, working with such stalwarts as Bioware, Epic Games, Gearbox Software and Harmonix by lending their expertise in AAA franchises like Borderlands, Brothers in Arms, Mass Effect and Rock Band.

For more information about Shoot Many Robots and the contest, ‘Design Many Robots,’ visit shootmanyrobots.com.

Also revealed today were a group of concept images that Demiurge hopes will give aspiring designers a taste of the mechanical flavor of the game’s enemy horde. Check them out below, along with a trailer for the game and the contest.

Started in 2003, the World Cosplay Summit was created by TV Aichi and attracts over 15,000 fans to the finals in Japan. The event promotes international exchange through the Japanese youth culture of manga and anime. The champions are graded on the finish of the costume design and the teams performance on stage. Involving 15 different countries, previous Grand Champions included teams from Italy, Brazil, France and Japan.

AM2 representative Chase Wang states, “It’s all about pride and bragging rights as cosplayers will revel in the competition against the best of the best. We are honored to host the World Cosplay Summit at AM2. The U.S. has yet to win, let’s do it this year! Join us and have the time of your life this Summer!”

Located in Anaheim, California AM2 is a 3 day event with no general attendance fee and aspires to be a key meeting place for fans that share common interests in Asian music, Animation & Anime, and Comics & Manga. AM2 will be held from July 1-3, 2011 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California.

Spectrum Fantasy Art 18 call for entries deadline coming soon

January 24, 2011 in Contests, News

The deadline for the fantasy art annual Spectrum 18 is this Friday, January 28th. Spectrum is dedicated to promoting the fantastic arts and providing an annual showcase for contemporary artists. According to the book’s publisher, the annual was created as a direct reaction to the lack of attention — the lack of respect — afforded to the creators of fantastic art in all its myriad forms. Spectrum’s goal is to provide a venue that acknowledges and credits artists often toiling in anonymity in the genre.

Here’s more from the publisher of Spectrum:

Spectrum, of course, isn’t about us: it’s about community. It’s about the creators joining together and deciding that we needed a forum that sets a standard of excellence; a venue that both promotes and establishes a criterium. Making it successfully through the judging process to be published in Spectrum has a significance that is noted and acknowledged. New artists emerge and break out every single year. The bar of excellence is raised, again, with each competition. Whether an artist has work selected by the jury or not is one thing, participating in Spectrum is an expression of belief that we NEED a gathering point, a symbolic place that tells everyone, “We’re here. And… we matter.”

Yes, the deadline is rapidly approaching. Yes, we require hard copies of everything for the judges (but, no, we don’t do it for fun — we have our reasons and… it’s worked great so far). Yes, we’re looking into a way to make digital entries a possibility in the future. But… NO, don’t break the bank by making oversized giclee prints. DON’T send your entries FedEx for morning delivery unless you want to. Mail them to us. Priority Mail dropped in the mailbox by the deadline is fine — and from Europe it’s anywhere from 3 to 5 Euros to mail us something. Just drop us an e-mail that they’re on the way and we’ll keep the door open, and if you’ve misplaced your submission forms they’re still available to download from our Entry Info page.

To be eligible to apply, an artist must be:

  • A U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident
  • At least 25 years old
  • A working artist with at least five years of professional experience
  • Not a full-time student

Though the Inquiry Form will not be available until February 1, complete grant guidelines are now available on our website. We will also be hosting info sessions online and in select cities nationwide.

About the Projects We Fund

Creative Capital provides integrated financial and advisory support to artists pursuing innovative and adventurous projects. Acting as a catalyst for the development of exceptional and imaginative ideas, we support artists whose work is provocative, timely and relevant; who are deeply engaged with their artforms and demonstrate a rigorous commitment to their craft, yet are also boldly original and push the boundaries of their genre; who create work that carries the potential to reshape the cultural landscape.

About the Application Process

To apply for a Creative Capital grant, an artist must first submit an online Inquiry Form regarding his or her project. The Inquiry Form for Film/Video and Visual Arts will be available on the Creative Capital website on February 1, 2011. Inquiry Forms must be submitted by March 1, 2011. The Inquiry Form will reopen in February 2012 for Emerging Fields, Innovative Literature and Performing Arts.

About the Inquiry Form

Applying artists should be prepared to describe how a grant would be a catalyst for artistic and professional growth at this time, the influences that inform their work, and how their work takes an inventive and original approach to form and content. The Inquiry Form also asks for a total budget figure and for artists to identify audience(s) for their project and any possible presenting venues.

The Black Eyed Peas’ will.i.am helps launch 2011 Robotics Competition

January 10, 2011 in Contests, Events, Gaming

Inventor Dean Kamen and will.i.am of The Black Eyed Peas launched the FIRST Robotics Competition 20th anniversary season today with the Kickoff of a new robotics game called “LOGO MOTION” before a crowd of 600 people at Southern New Hampshire University in Manchester, hometown and headquarters of FIRST. An estimated 50,000 around the world joined the Kickoff via live NASA-TV broadcast and webcast.

“It’s not just about robots,” said FIRST founder Dean Kamen. “It’s about building self-confidence, respect and important relationships with people who invent new technologies to make a better future.”

“I’m inspired by FIRST,” said will.i.am. “I’ve traveled all over the world, and this is the most exciting thing. You are cool, and I’m going to turn it up so everyone knows it.”

In the FRC “LOGO MOTION” robotics game, two alliances of three teams will compete on a 27-by-54-foot field with poles, attempting to earn points by hanging as many triangle, circle and square logo pieces as possible. Bonus points will be earned for each robot that can hang and assemble logo pieces to form the FIRST logo. Robots can also deploy Mini-Bots to climb vertical poles for a chance to earn additional points.

Through collaboration with LEGO Education, a new opportunity to earn extra points is available to teams if they design, build and deploy a FIRST Tech Challenge Mini-Bot from their primary robot. For the first time in the history of the program, FRC will allow the use of the two robotic building systems from the FIRST LEGO League and FIRST Tech Challenge programs: LEGO MINDSTORMS and TETRIX.

Guest speaker Neal Bascomb, author of THE NEW COOL, which chronicles the challenges of a FIRST Robotics team, said, “FIRST is a dramatic sports story that includes teamwork, mentorship, and inspiration. FIRST is about daring yourself to be exceptional.”

Sponsored by NASA and Needham, Mass.-based PTC, the FRC Kickoff event is an opportunity for teams competing in the season to see the new game challenge and rules firsthand. Teams across the nation, and in Canada, Israel and Mexico, watched the proceedings via NASA-TV broadcast or webcast from 70 local Kickoff sites, including Manchester, many of which also offered workshops and a chance to meet other teams.

“We know the program works. The partnership between you and your Sponsors and Mentors is a key reason,” said Robin Saitz, Senior Vice President, Solutions Marketing, and FIRST Executive Sponsor, PTC. “Your mentors are an invaluable resource. Many of them come from our customers like NASA, JCPenney, BAE Systems, and John Deere, just to name a few. They invest in you with their time. Learn from them. And don’t forget to thank them, over and over again.”

The Kickoff included presentations by FIRST founder Dean Kamen; PTC senior vice president, solutions marketing and FIRST executive sponsor Robin Saitz; NASA program executive Dave Lavery; FIRST chairman Walt P. Havenstein; FIRST national advisor Dr. Woodie Flowers; and FIRST president Jon Dudas. The program also featured remarks by THE NEW COOL author Neal Bascomb; MacArthur Foundation fellow Amir Abo-Shaeer; U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, New Hampshire; Gov. John Lynch of New Hampshire; and FIRST Robotics Competition director Bill Miller. The program also recognized this year’s Safety Animation Award winner, the Funky Monkeys of Saratoga, Calif., and the 2011 FIRST Safety Video presented by Underwriters Laboratories.

As part of FIRST Green, a series of sustainable, eco-friendly FIRST fundraising programs, the FIRST Green e-watt saver program was launched, which enables FIRST teams to sell an exclusive, state-of-the-art, 7-watt LED light bulb replacing the standard 60-watt household light bulb – for both longer life and significantly lower energy consumption. Other FIRST®Green programs being piloted for teams include the recycling of electronics and a program that would reduce energy consumption through more efficient household load-balancing.

At today’s FRC Kickoff, FIRST teams were shown the “LOGO MOTION” playing field and received a Kit of Parts made up of motors, batteries, a control system, a PC and a mix of automation components – but no instructions. Working with Mentors, students have six weeks to design, build, program and test their robots to meet the season’s engineering challenge. Once these young inventors create a robot, their teams participate in competitions that measure the effectiveness of each robot, the power of collaboration and the determination of students.

FIRST also introduced a design video aimed at supporting teams through their initial design process. “Like my fellow members of the FIRST Executive Advisory Board, I’m always amazed by the work FIRST teams do in six weeks,” said Joe Astroth, Chief Education Officer, Autodesk, and FIRST Executive Advisory Board member. “We want to provide teams with an array of resources, and I think that an understanding of the design process is a huge value-add – whether you’re competing in FRC or pursuing your career.”

Adobe, Wired and a bunch of Monsters are giving away a copy of Adobe Creative Suite 5

October 27, 2010 in Contests, Media Images

Adobe CS 5 packagingAdobe has teamed with Wired and the makers of Monsters, to give away a copy of Adobe Creative Suite 5 Design Premium, which has a retail value of $1,800. As most of you already know, Adobe Creative Suite enables users to animate images and create a wide range of graphic effects, the fruits of which are dramatically revealed right here on MyFantasyArt.com.

Six years ago NASA discovered the possibility of alien life within our solar system. A probe was launched to collect samples, but crashed upon re-entry over Central America. Soon after, new life forms began to appear and grow. In an effort to stem the destruction that resulted, half of Mexico was quarantined as an Infected Zone. Today, the American and Mexican military still struggle to contain the massive creatures. Our story begins when a jaded U.S. journalist (Scoot McNairy) begrudgingly agrees to find his boss’ daughter, a shaken American tourist (Whitney Able) and escort her through the infected zone to the safety of the US border.

So what’s the connection between the premiere digital graphics software producer and a small, innovative monster movie? Filmmaker Gareth Edwards used Adobe Creative Suite 5 to create the horrifying alien from Monsters. After principal photography wrapped, his gripping sci-fi movie set in an alien-infested region of Mexico, Edwards holed up for a year in post-production and produced all the CGI work for Monsters himself. During that time, he generated more than 1,000 iterations of the movie’s giant extraterrestrial, including the concept drawing below.

More about Chew!

Tony Chu is a cop with a secret. A weird secret. Tony Chu is Cibopathic, which means he gets psychic impressions from whatever he eats. It also means he’s a hell of a detective, as long as he doesn’t mind nibbling on the corpse of a murder victim to figure out whodunit, and why. It`s a dirty job, and Tony has to eat terrible things in the name of justice. And if that wasn`t bad enough, the government has figured out Tony Chu`s secret. They have plans for him… whether he likes it or not.

Presenting a twisted new series about cops, crooks, cooks, cannibals and clairvoyants, written by John Layman (Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness, House of M: Fantastic Four and Puffed) with mind-blowing art by Rob Guillory.
