IDW returns to Deadworld with new weekly series

May 16, 2012 in Book Previews

This August, IDW Publishing returns to original co-creator Gary Reed’s classic zombie series Deadworld. When vicious masses of undead monsters have taken over the planet, desperate humans cling to hope while warring factions of uniquely sinister zombies conspire against each other. Deadworld is a zombie tale unlike any other and a horrific and thrilling world that is decades in the making and unique unto itself.

“It seems like everything with Deadworld over the years is culminating towards this storyline, yet at the same time, it is an opportunity to introduce new readers to the Deadworld saga. That’s why I’m so excited about this series, as it accomplishes both” said co-creator Reed.

Deadworld has seen a number of different formats and volumes over the years, but Reed’s collaboration with artist Sami Makkonen, Deadworld: War of the Dead will be hitting comic shop shelves in a particularly thrilling fashion this August. War of the Dead will be released weekly in every one of August’s five weeks. Additionally, for the first time, Deadworld will be in horrifying, skull-crushing full-color.

As a bonus salvo in IDW’s August Deadworld onslaught, Deadworld Classic Volume 1 and Volume 2 will be offered again; as well as the hit Deadworld: Last Siesta TPB.

Warren Ellis pens foreword for The Art of Molly Crabapple: Week in Hell

February 16, 2012 in Book Previews, Media Images

In September 2011, acclaimed artist Molly Crabapple embarked on a truly unique and captivating endeavor: one hotel room, 270 square feet of blank paper, and five days to cover it all in art. Backed by her dedicated fans and armed with caffeine, champagne, and a lot of ink, she set about transforming the room with her engrossing and dynamic work; creating vast, imaginative pieces that would turn an ordinary hotel room into an otherworldly wonderland.

“I conceived of Week in Hell as a way to break on through to the other (artistic) side by drawing beyond the limits of endurance,” said Crabapple. “I never imagined that so many people would want to help me do it. While covering the room in drawings, I thought I was pro until I collapsed at the end of one 20-foot wall. The room killed me a bit, but I killed it a bit, too.”

Also featuring a foreword by Warren Ellis, photography by Steve Prue, and a cover by fashion photographer Clayton Cubitt, this is an art book unlike any other.

The Art of Molly Crabapple: Week in Hell is the first volume of a three-volume art-book series that IDW will be producing with Crabapple in 2012. It will be available in stores on March 14, 2012.

Screenwriter Tony Puryear creates edgy graphic novel Concrete Park for Dark Horse Comics

February 8, 2012 in Book Previews, Media Images

New sci-fi epic Concrete Park, written and drawn by Hollywood screenwriter, to appear in legendary anthology magazine Dark Horse Presents.

Tony Puryear wrote the 1996 Arnold Schwarzenegger smash hit Eraser, becoming the first African American screenwriter to pen a $100 million summer blockbuster. Since that time, he’s written action and sci-fi scripts for a who’s who of Hollywood A listers, from Will Smith to Mel Gibson to Jerry Bruckheimer, and adapted storied sci-fi properties like Fahrenheit 451 and Buck Rogers for the big screen. Now Puryear brings his writing and art talents to the world of graphic novels, with Concrete Park for Dark Horse Presents. Concrete Park, Tony Puryear’s first comics project, appears in Dark Horse Presents #8 from Dark Horse Comics.

“Concrete Park is a sprawling epic,” Puryear says. “It’s the sci-fi story I’ve been waiting to tell. It’s a perfect fit with Dark Horse Presents, the legendary anthology comic that served as a launch pad for innovative work by the biggest names in comics, including Frank Miller (Sin City, 300) and Mike Mignola (Hellboy). I’m honored to be in the company of these amazing world builders, and happy Mike Richardson of Dark Horse believes Concrete Park belongs with them.”

Concrete Park is a dark and provocative near-future story. It takes place in a turbulent mega-city on a distant desert planet (think Cairo or Rio in space). Young human exiles from Earth must fight to make a new world there. They are young, violent and ten billion miles from home. In its ambitious scope, it resembles nothing so much as George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, but with favelas and aliens, cops and cyborgs, ghettos and gangs, instead of castles and armies.

Concrete Park was co-created by Puryear and his wife, actress Erika Alexander (Living Single, Déjà Vu), and her brother, writer Robert Alexander, with Puryear also handling the art chores on the book.

Tony Puryear is the first African American screenwriter to write a $100 million summer movie blockbuster. His 1996 hit Eraser catapulted him into a career writing pictures for A listers Jerry Bruckheimer (Buck Rogers), Will Smith, and Oliver Stone. Puryear’s adaptation of the Ray Bradbury classic Fahrenheit 451 for Oscar-winning director Mel Gibson has circulated in Hollywood for years as a legendary unproduced script. His latest script is Lady Scarface for the new RKO Pictures.

A talented artist and designer, Puryear was recently honored when his official campaign poster for Hillary Clinton’s historic 2008 presidential run was added to the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Portrait Gallery.

Along with Tony Puryear, other writers and artists featured in Dark Horse Presents #8 include John Arcudi, Brian Wood, Howard Chaykin, Neal Adams, Andi Watson, Al Gordon, MJ Butler and Beau Smith, along with artists Duncan Fegredo (who drew the cover), Geof Darrow, Kristian Donaldson, Thomas Yeates, Mark Wheatley and Eduardo Barreto.

New logo and identity for DC Comics

February 1, 2012 in Book Previews, Media Images, News

DC Entertainment recently revealed a new brand identity for DC Comics, Vertigo and MAD Magazine. According to a post on the company’s blog, the new identity is reflective of the it’s mission to fully realize the value of a rich portfolio of brands, stories and characters, distinguished by incredible breadth and depth across publishing, media and merchandise. A new logo for DC Comics was also introduced, closely aligning with DC Entertainment’s new mark.

“It’s a new era at DC Entertainment and the new look reflects a dynamic, bold approach while at the same time celebrates the company’s rich heritage and robust portfolio of characters,” said DC Entertainment’s John Rood. “It was just a few months ago that Superman, Batman and many of our other Super Heroes were updated when we launched DC Comics – The New 52 and now it’s time to do the same for the company’s identity while remaining true to the power of storytelling which is still at the heart of DC Entertainment.”

DC Entertainment worked with leading brand consulting and design firm Landor Associates to develop the new identity, meant to create a visual connection among the company, its three brands DC Comics, Vertigo and MAD, along with its vast array of properties. The design of the new DC Entertainment identity uses a peel effect, with the D strategically placed over the C with the upper right-hand portion of the D peeling back to unveil the hidden C – symbolizing the duality of the iconic characters that are present within DC Entertainment’s portfolio.

The new brand identity will come to life across all consumer touch points in order to create a clear and consistent message in support of DC Entertainment. The new identity will begin to appear on comic books and graphic novels as well as new websites in March. Consumers will also see the new identity rolled out over time on other DC Entertainment products from Warner Bros. including film, television, interactive games and merchandise.

“We believe our new brand identity will strongly resonate with our loyal fans who will want to proudly express their affinity for DC Entertainment and their passion for their favorite stories and characters, this new look allows them to easily do this. In addition we were excited to update our identity, it’s not often a company gets to revisit something as important as its brand and we took the opportunity to make sure it represented the multi-media business we set out to build with the formation of DC Entertainment,” said DC Entertainment’s Amit Desai.

Watchmen to return in 7-book prequel series plus cover art

February 1, 2012 in Book Previews, Media Images

In a controversial move, DC Entertainment is returning to the Watchmen universe, the acclaimed 1986 graphic novel by writer Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons. This, according to a report and interview by THR with one of the writers involved, J. Michael Straczynski. This summer, DC Comics will publish a seven comic book mini-series called Before Watchmen. Every week, a new prequel title will be released, each focusing on the characters’ lives and adventures in the years before the original Watchmen story.

The iconic characters of course, include Rorschach, Comedian, Dr. Manhattan, Nite Owl, Ozymandias, Silk Spectre, and the 1940s superteam The Minutemen. Each will be featured in stories from noted comics creators including the previously mentioned J. Michael Straczynski, Brian Azzarello, Darwyn Cooke, Adam Hughes, Andy Kubert and Joe Kubert, among others.

Watchmen is the top-selling graphic novel of all time and was part of a wave of comics in the 1980s that redefined the genre. The work has remained untouched, never integrated into the larger DC Comics universe, due partially to the reverence by fanboys and partially to Moore’s insistence that it is a singular vision. Moore came out against the 2009 movie adaptation directed by Zack Snyder.

According to the report, DC, which owns the characters, insists that enough time has passed to explore new stories featuring the Watchmen. The company has also enlisted the blessing of Watchmen original artist Dave Gibbons, with hopes of appeasing most comics fans, and gaining wider acceptance of the Before Watchmen project.

“It’s our responsibility as publishers to find new ways to keep all of our characters relevant,” said DC Entertainment co-publishers Dan DiDio and Jim Lee in a statement. “After twenty five years, the Watchmen are classic characters whose time has come for new stories to be told.”

Straczynski, known as the co-creator of the sci-fi show Babylon 5, as well as a writer of Superman and Spider-Man stories, will pen the four-issue Nite Owl series, which includes art by Andy and Joe Kubert, along with the four-issue Dr. Manhattan, with art by Hughes.

CLICK HERE for an interview with J. Michael Straczynski, where he discusses why he personally felt the time had come to return to the world of the Watchmen.

30 Days of Night creator to premiere Nosferatu Wars in Dark Horse Presents

January 25, 2012 in Book Previews, Media Images

Today Dark Horse announced that the new vampiric tale Nosferatu Wars from Steve Niles (Criminal Macabre, 30 Days of Night), will premiere in Dark Horse Presents.

Nosferatu Wars takes place during The Black Plague – a time of death and misery – except for the undead. For vampires, the Black Death was a welcome relief from being hunted and a time of incredible growth for the undead. On the night of their wedding, two vampire lovers are torn apart and separated for five hundred years, setting off a sequence of events that will bring the modern world to its knees.

Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith redefined the vampire genre with the groundbreaking comic series 30 Days of Night in 2002. Ten years later, Niles is poised to make history again, as he and Nosferatu Wars artist Menton3 blow the sparkle off of the undead in Nosferatu Wars, premiering in Dark Horse Presents later this year.

Images from Zombies Vs. Robots new pulp series

January 25, 2012 in Book Previews, Media Images

zombies-vs-robots-comicIDW Publishing continues expanding its prose publishing activities with a two-month-long “e-singles” promotion featuring all-new stories set in the gleefully gory Zombies Vs. Robots universe. The property was first published in 2006 as a two-issue mini-series from the creative team of artist Ashley Wood and writer/editor Chris Ryall. Helpless to resist ZVR’s rowdy mix of clunky, wise-cracking robots trying to stem the zombie apocalypse (the fault of clumsy scientists), with the remnants of mankind caught in the middle. There have been multiple ZVR miniseries, and in 2010, Sony Pictures optioned the film rights for Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes production company.

Beginning on January 20, IDW will digitally release one new ZVR prose story each week for eight weeks.

“We’re calling this our 8×8 plan,” explains Jeff Conner, the IDW contributing editor responsible for the Zombies Vs. Robots prose line. “Each week, from January 20 to March 9, we’ll debut a new short story torn from the festering jaws of the shambling, clanking world that is Zombies Vs. Robots. And these all-new tales will be a tasty $0.99 each—it’s our New Year’s gift to the brain-eating reading public.”

Pammi Shaw: Creator of Gods and Also Blogger is the first 8×8 offering, and comes from the multi-talented actress/writer Brea Grant (Heroes, Dexter, Halloween II). Told via blog entries, her story extends the recent Zombies vs. Robots: Undercity comic book miniseries, which introduced readers to the young blogger from India, and ended with the members of an elite subterranean enclave underneath the Washington Monument being wiped out by ravenous zombies—or so we are led to believe.

Debuting weekly starting on January 20, 2012, the ZVR e-singles will be available on the Kindle, Nook and in iBooks.

The full 8×8 schedule is:

Brea Grant — Pammi Shaw: Creator of Gods and Also Blogger (1/20/12)
UnderCity’s lone survivor continues her blog and meets (creates?) a digital deity with its own ideas about fighting the zombie apocalypse. Brea Grant is sometimes a writer (We Will Bury You; Suicide Girls), sometimes an actress (Heroes; Dexter; Halloween 2) and all-the-time a nice person. She is currently directing her first film.

Steve Rasnic Tem — To Denver (with Hiram Battling Zombies) (1/27/12)
What happens when high-test chronic is tainted with potent zombie blood? Will it be a high to die for? Multiple award-winning author Steve Rasnic Tem has published over 300 short stories in the areas of fantasy, science fiction, crime, and horror. His latest novel is Deadfall Hotel.

Nancy A. Collins — Angus: Zombie-Versus-Robot Fighter (2/03/12)
A young man is trained by his scientist father to fight zombies, robot-style. What could go wrong? Nancy A. Collins is the author of numerous novels and short stories, including the best-selling Sunglasses After Dark, and was a writer for DC Comics’ Swamp Thing. She is a recipient of the Bram Stoker and British Fantasy Awards, and has been nominated for the World Fantasy, Eisner & International Horror Guild awards. Left Hand Magic, the newest installment in the acclaimed Golgotham series, is now available.

Nick Mamatas — Throckmorton’s Bad Day (2/10/12)
Years before the zombie apocalypse, an enterprising and amoral young college student (later to become Dr. Throckmorton in the ZVR comics) tests experimental street drugs on the local users. The results will have unforeseen consequences for his future self. Nick Mamatas is the author of several unusual novels, including The Damned Highway with Brian Keene, and The Last Weekend. His short fiction has appeared in Asimov’s SF, Long Island Noir and many other magazines and anthologies.

Amber Benson — Mademoiselle Consuela and Her Army of One (2/17/12)
Like a princess locked in a tower, Consuela lives on a secluded island with only her loyal warbot for company. Then the pirates come. Amber Benson is an actor, filmmaker, novelist and amateur occultist who sings in the shower. Best known for her work as Tara Maclay on Buffy The Vampire Slayer, she is also the author of the Calliope Reaper-Jones series and the co-director (with Adam Busch) of the feature film, Drones.

Don Webb — The Wizards vs. the Bots (2/24/12)
Can black magic control zombies? What about warbots? Don Webb has 20 published books ranging from the nonfiction occult classic Uncle Setnakt’s Nightbook to the best weird west book, Webb’s Weird Wild West.

Kaaron Warren — The River of Memory (3/02/12)
An Amazon goddess thinks she can restore humanity to zombies; a warbot has doubts.
Kaaron Warren is an award-winning horror and science-fiction writer based in Australia. She has two short story collections and three novels in print.

Lincoln Crisler — Kettletop’s Revisionary Plot (3/09/12)
A distraught scientist travels back in time in a desperate attempt to save his wife and prevent the discovery of the deadly Z Virus. Lincoln Crisler is author, editor and reviewer as well as an active-duty soldier in the United States Army. His books include Magick & Misery and Wild. He is the editor of the dark-superhero anthology Corrupts Absolutely? He has served as a contributing writer for The Horror Library and Shroud Magazine.

Analog media fans needn’t worry that IDW’s new ZVR stories will only be available in e-pub formats. “We aren’t abandoning print in any way,” confirms Conner. “From the beginning we designed the ZVR prose program to have distinct identities for print and digital. So while it’s true that there will never be print incarnations of any of the 8×8 series themselves, we do have a full slate of ZVR collections and novellas in production on the print side; the 8×8 stories will appear there, just in different contexts.”

The first print collection will be Zombies Vs. Robots: This Means War!, set to appear in March, 2012.

Pammi Shaw: Creator of Gods and Also Blogger will be available on theKindle, the Nook, in iBooks, and Kobo on January 20, 2012.

January 25, 2012 in Book Previews

IDW Publishing and Topps are pleased to announce the multiple Eisner Award-winning creative team for Mars Attacks, an all-new ongoing comic series based on the fan-favorite Mars Attacks franchise.

Debuting in June 2012, IDW’s comic series will offer the first stories of an all-new Mars Attacks universe, bringing the brand’s outrageous action and dark humor to a new set of tales. Writer John Layman, author and co-creator of the Eisner-winning series Chew, will pen the series, with art by John McCrea, best known for his collaborations with Garth Ennis, including Eisner-winner Hitman.

Created in 1962, Mars Attacks celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2012 with major product launches throughout the year. IDW’s new comic series, as well as high-quality reprints of existing material, will be a cornerstone of that effort.

Originally published by Topps as a series of trading cards, Mars Attacks was created by Len Brown and Woody Gelman, after Brown was inspired by the Wally Wood cover to Weird Science #16 (EC Comics). The cards went on to achieve cult status for their then-shocking imagery—fully painted by pulp legendNorm Saunders and based on designs by Wood and Bob Powell—and remains a staple of pop culture. Topps revived the franchise in the mid 1990s with a second card set, comic book series and toy line. The story was also adapted into the 1996 feature film Mars Attacks!, directed by Tim Burton.

Mars Attacks will include covers by McCrea and alternate covers by such comic-book luminaries as Sam Kieth, Ben Templesmith and Eric Powell. The first issue will also feature a unique approach to variant covers: It will ship with 55 different covers, each depicting one of the original trading cards from the debut set of Mars Attacks from 1962. A complete collector’s set of the 55 covers in a box that replicates the original card packaging will be offered separately as well.

Mars Attacks #1 hits stores this June.

Caitlín R. Kiernan’s Alabaster finds a home at Dark Horse

Caitlín R. Kiernan is the author of numerous works of dark fantasy and science fiction, including nine novels, several comic-book series – including Sandman spinoff The Dreaming – and over two hundred published short stories and novellas. Now, she brings her tales to the land of Dark Horse Comics with Alabaster.

Alabaster is based on Caitlín R. Kiernan’s fan-favorite Dancy Flammarion stories, a dark fantasy series centered around a female teenage protagonist of striking appearance and hidden, terrible depths. For nearly as long as she can remember, seventeen-year-old Dancy Flammarion has fought monsters, cutting a bloody swath through the demons and dark things of the world, aimed like a weapon by a merciless seraph, more taskmaster than guardian.

Part continuation, part re-imagining, the series begins with Dancy making and breaking an oath in the name of her seraph, who subsequently abandons her. Injured and alone, Dancy has to find her own way for the first time in her life—and the wolves are closing in.

Alabaster will first appear in Dark Horse Presents #9 (on sale February 22, 2012), followed by the five-issue miniseries Alabaster: Wolves, which throws readers into Dancy’s world with a bang, strips away her seraph, and introduces the two characters who will become her long-term supporting cast. Alabaster: Wolves #1 is on sale April 11, 2012.

Alabaster features art work by Eisner Award–nominated artist Steve Lieber and cover art by Greg Ruth.

Dark Horse Comics collects Brian Wood’s Channel Zero

December 12, 2011 in Book Previews

Out of print and unavailable to readers for more than three years, Dark Horse Comics is giving new life to a critically acclaimed classic with the complete collection of Brian Wood’s Channel Zero.

DMZ and The Massive creator Brian Wood launched an all-out assault on the comics medium in 1997 with Channel Zero, an influential, forward-thinking series that combined art, politics, and graphic design in a unique way. Hitting on themes of freedom of expression, hacking, cutting-edge media manipulation, and police surveillance, it remains as relevant today as it did back then.

The Channel Zero collection contains the original series; the prequel graphic novel, Jennie One (illustrated by Becky Cloonan); the best of the two Public Domain design books; and almost fifteen years of extras, rarities, short stories, and unused art. Also featuring the now-classic Warren Ellis introduction and an all-new cover by Wood, this is the must-have edition. A blistering take on media control in a repressive future America.

Brian Wood says of the series, “Channel Zero is literally the start of my comics career, the first proper comic I ever made, and as such as informed everything that’s come after it, especially DMZ and the upcoming The Massive. It also put me and Becky Cloonan together, helping build a creative partnership that has lasted a decade. This edition here is the definitive one, including everything worth printing, including a color section that includes the original covers to the single issues.”

Check out this prequel film based on Steve Niles zombie graphic novel

December 12, 2011 in Book Previews, Movie and TV Previews

Ahead of the premiere of its first original movie – Steve Niles’ Remains – Chiller has unleashed zombies with the debut of a special online-only prequel called Remains: Road to Reno. The 11-minute webisode has been produced exclusively for Chillertv.com, and debuted online Friday, giving viewers a glimpse at the origins of Remains’ post-apocalyptic zombie invasion.

At the outset of the film, which premieres Friday, December 16th at 10 pm on Chiller, a radioactive blast transforms every tourist and local in Reno, Nevada into mindless, ravenous zombies. But before the action begins in Reno, somewhere just outside the city a lone mechanic (Morgan West) is learning first-hand what’s required to survive the undead.

With Remains: Road to Reno, Chiller’s official prequel to Steve Niles’s Remains, viewers can head back before the blast to watch as the virus descends upon an isolated gas station. Imagined by writer Steve Niles, this exclusive online event reveals the origins of Remains characters – both alive and undead – and pits zombie against zombie on the blood-soaked road to Reno. Remains: Road to Reno is written by John Doolan and directed by Colin Theys.

The group takes refuge in a vacant casino and fights a losing battle against the undead, who grow steadily stronger, smarter and more aggressive by the minute. The movie stars Grant Bowler (True Blood, Ugly Betty), Lance Reddick (Fringe, Lost, The Wire), Miko Hughes (Pet Sematary) and Tawny Cypress (Rescue Me, Heroes). Remains is written by John Doolan and directed by Colin Theys; Andrew Gernhard and Zach O’Brien will serve as producers for Synthetic Cinema International. A Girl Called Ana Teaches Kittens How to Draw on Kickstarter

December 6, 2011 in Book Previews, News, Videos

Josh Hagen sent in a note about a former college professor of his that’s got a new project up on Kickstarter. Support him if you’re able, looks like a great project. More information is below and CLICK HERE for the Kickstarter page.

Hi! My name is Bob Pendarvis and 20 years ago I was asked to create and teach the first comic book illustration classes at the Savannah College of art & Design. They were so successful that I was asked to develop comics-based BFA and MFA degree programs. At Atlanta’s Dragon Con, I recruited artist Bo Hampton and writer Mark Kneece to help me found this new major, which I decided to call Sequential Art (as a tribute to the legendary Will Eisner).

During the 18+ years I worked at SCAD, my focus was to concentrate on storytelling, allowing students to write and draw stories using their own unique approaches and styles. I was especially dedicated to making sure my classes were as female-friendly as possible.

My new graphic novel, A GIRL CALLED ANA TEACHES KITTENS HOW TO DRAW, is meant to provide inspiration for the next generation of young sequential artists and storytellers. It is the first in a series of books aimed especially at young girls, but hopefully entertaining for readers of all ages, girls or boys. Each 8.5″ x 11″, hardcover, full color book has over 200 pages and tells the story of how ANA helps kittens realize that communicating with art is simpler than they’d suspected, yet much more complicated than they’d ever imagined. The goal of my kickstarter project is to be able to produce a high quality, full color hardcover book and send copies to potential publishers and school libraries. My ultimate goal would be to develop the ANA books into an animated tv series.
